Sick Day Essentials: Slowing Down and Finding Comfort with a Little Self-Care
If you know me, you know I’m usually the go-go-go type — always juggling a million things, rarely sitting still. But when I’m sick, it’s a total reset. I have to remind myself to slow down and actually listen to my body, which is honestly harder than it sounds. Right now, I’m lying in bed as I type this, giving myself permission to rest. And that’s the kind of self-care that really matters, especially on sick days.
Why self-care matters on sick days:
When your body is telling you to pause, pushing through isn’t helpful — it just drags out the recovery. Slowing down, hydrating, nourishing yourself, and making space for rest are all acts of kindness to your mind and body. Even if you’re like me and tend to feel guilty about taking time off, honoring that need to rest helps you bounce back faster and stronger.
My sick day essentials:
I like to create a cozy, nurturing vibe that helps me relax, because when you feel good in your space, it’s easier to let go and recover.
Sweats: I live in my Aviator Nation sweatshirt and sweats — the softest, comfiest clothes to feel wrapped up in a warm hug all day long.
Tea: I swear by Traditional Traditions Dandelion Leaf & Root tea. It’s great for detox and gives my liver a little love while I’m resting.
Hydration: Perfect Amino electrolytes mixed into my water, plus trace mineral drops, keep me hydrated and balanced.
Skincare: Even when I’m not feeling 100%, I use my DermaQuest Stem Cell 3D Body Creme — it’s nourishing and makes me feel cared for.
Entertainment: I like to keep my mind calm but engaged. Right now, I’m reading How to Love Better by Yung Pueblo, binge-watching Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, and diving into The Lord of the Rings trilogy for some epic comfort vibes.
The candle that comforts me:
My go-to is Tom Foolery, a warm, cozy scent with brandied pear and cinnamon that feels like fall wrapped in a hug. It’s the perfect companion when I’m tucked in bed — it reminds me to breathe, slow down, and sink into the moment.
Taking sick days seriously is self-care in action. Whether it’s lighting your favorite candle, slipping into cozy clothes, or sipping tea, these little rituals help you heal with grace. So the next time you’re feeling under the weather, give yourself that same kindness you’d offer a friend.
